Bodrum

 Bodrum, ancient Halicarnassus, is one of Turkey's most beloved tourist destinations. The mild climate, historical sites and proximity to nature has long drawn people to visit and even stay long-term.

Bodrum is known for its beautiful promenade, lined with wooden gulets, fancy yachts, and fishing boats against a backdrop of little, white cube houses framed with purple bougainvillea flowers.   The town surrounds a 15th century crusader castle straight out of a fairy tale, now home to one of the foremost museums of underwater archaeology in the world.

Lovers of history can indulge in the lore of antiquity, and followers of art can visit the frequent local exhibitions by local artists.  Bodrum's sunshine and nightlife are world famous, but daytime activities also include numerous water sports, jeep safaris, nature walks, and fresh markets.

The Bodrum Peninsula

Only a few steps out of the bustling city center of Bodrum brings you to a different world entirely.  Acres of tangerine groves, olive plantations, and pristine beaches define much of the peninsula. Much of the charm of Bodrum lies in the sleepy fish restaurant on a stretch of beach which becomes an active tavern at nightfall.  Ortakent, Yahsi, Bağli, Akyarlar, Turgutreis, Gümüşlük, Türkbükkü and Torba are among the towns scattered along the peninsula.  For the curious traveler, there are also many smaller villages along the middle of the peninsula, each preserving centuries old traditions in a modern world.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

Can you name the seven wonders of the ancient world?  Few people can claim to have visited any of the ancient wonders, but visitors to Bodrum can actually climb up, down and around what remains of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus.  Built by Artemisia II for her husband and brother King Mausolos, the structure was so grand that it was apparently viewable to the naked eye from nearby islands. 

Ancient Halicarnassus is also the birthplace of the historian and writer Herodotus, who chronicled much of what we know of the people of ancient Caria, Doria and Ionia who once populated Aegean and Mediterranean Turkey.
